Established in 2010, the Fatima bint Mohamed bin Zayed Initiative (FBMI) is an innovative social enterprise that harnesses the traditional skills of the Afghan people to produce beautiful hand knotted carpets, embroidered furniture and local handicraft at fair market wages. In addition, the enterprise also supports farmers in the harvest of their crops, following which the initiative purchases from them. FBMI products are marketed and sold internationally.
To date FBMI has employed over 4,000 Afghans – 70% of which are women, 35% of which are widows – at its facilities and provided each of them and their families with free access to healthcare services.
